The last Friends of the Northwest Branch hike started at the same parking lot. This one goes the other direction. (copied from an email sent to my neighborhood listserv)

Hike along the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River
From Burnt Mills Dam to Brookside Nature Center
Saturday, May 6, 2006
9:30am - 12:30pm

Get away from automobile traffic and experience the beautiful, natural environment! Discover the Spring wildflowers along one of the most scenic sections of the Anacostia River watershed!

Meet at Burnt Mills Dam between 9:15 and 9:30 for doughnuts and drinks and then start hiking at 9:30. We will hike upstream along the east side of the Northwest Branch as we enjoy the wildflowers, native trees and shrubs of the Northwest Branch Valley. The hike will wind up at Brookside Nature Center & Gardens where everyone can enjoy the conservatory displays, use the bathroom, visit the outside gardens, eat lunch, etc. A real reward for hiking all that ways!

This is a 4-5 mile hike which should take approximately 3 hours. It is a one-way hike, so some cars will need to be at the end point to shuttle people back to their cars at the starting point. The car ride between the two points is about 20 minutes.

Bring: Lunch, water, weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable footwear.

Sponsored by the Neighbors of the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River. To join the walk, coordinate rides back to the starting point or for more information contact Christopher Pohlhaus at 301-651-2323 or pohlhaus_cj@yahoo.com.

Travel Directions: Meet at Burnt Mills Dam, 10700 Columbia Pike (aka Colesville Road or Rt. 29)--from the Beltway take US Rt. 29 North, go approximately 1 mile, at the bottom of the hill you will see the dam on the left side, continue past it and make a U-turn at Hillwood Drive. Some cars will need to be at the end point to shuttle people back to their cars at the starting point--if you can do this contact Christopher to coordinate and get directions.
