This weekend, as we have for the past several years, we kept my brother-in-law's three kids. It started when the parents wanted to take a weekend vacation to celebrate the mom's birthday. She and I have the same birthday. And another brother-in-law married someone with a birthday two days later. You're probably thinking that a lot of terrible horoscope puns are committed at family gatherings this time of year, but the fact is that this level of sophisticated wordplay lies outside their collective humor repertoire. Moreover, the ranks of birthday-mate sisters-in-law* are thinning apace. Two years ago, 10/5 took the kids and moved out. This summer, 10/3 did. So dwelling on comparisons would be ill-advised.
Even though the birthday weekend thing was out, I thought we should have the kids over as usual, so we did. And, as usual, I was happy to see them arrive and maybe a tad happier to wave good-bye.
--- *I am sure that the brother of the person I marry is my brother-in-law, but I feel uncomfortable referring to his wife as my sister-in-law. I think she should be my sister-in-law-in-law.
