unlovely words

A friend has written that blog is one of the ugliest words in the English language. I can't agree, since I already carry around (in my head) a short list of The Ugliest Words and I don't see blog displacing any of them.
  • effluvia
  • fecund
  • globule
  • palimpsest
  • panties

Glory be! I have flossed again.

I detest the word panties, it makes me squirm. But while I don't think blog is an ugly word, I feel apologetic when I use it, as if I am trying to be cooler than I really am--sort of as if I tried to use the word "phat" (which probably isn't even used any more)

You've almost reached the habit-forming point with flossing -- I think it takes something like 30 days to form a habit?

But of course I still want the floss report.

Good for you on continuing to floss. I started a few years ago, and I'm still sticking with it.

As for ugly words, I agree with your list and I would add, flaccid. Not only is it yucky to say, but it's also just so darned onomatopoetic.

Not sure about palimpsest, that one might be in the 'so bad it's good' column...

The Giant tried to use "blog" in casual conversation today, but her said "...those Internet blobs, or whatever you call them." He's so out of touch, it's refreshing. We decided most should be called "blahgs".
