Twenty fun

J had a great week, going to book talks with David Sedaris and John Waters. I was pretty jealous but today she brought me the best present imaginable: a book inscribed with its own darling little poop. Not that little, actually, and it's crowned with sweet teensy lines of stink.

My week was middling, but it has certainly taken a turn for the magnificent now!

I didn't like this when I read about it. While weeding today (great minds!) I had the chance to ponder why. It's not just because it's a stupid juvenile joke, drawing a piece of poop. It's because I've enjoyed Sedaris' work; I generally think him quite clever. I find it disappointing to see him stoop to shock/gross-out gimmicks. He's too smart to need to do that--I thought. I would be less dismayed to see this had it come from, oh, Howard Stern.

While my fondness for poop jokes is indefensible, I hope it will relieve you to know that Mr. Sedaris was drawing in response to J's explanation for bringing him multiple copies of an old title to sign. Also, he stopped mid-signing to rustle up a brown Sharpie for the picture.

I don't know what Howard Stern is up to these days, but back when he had a regular radio morning show B used to listen and I found him unbearable. Once I was catching a ride to work with B and the show was on. HS started a long rant and it was so funny that I almost sprained my face trying to remain unamused. Infuriating.
