Sunshine, yay!

Bad news first. The library emailed me an overdue notice while I was staying at a fancy hotel, so I didn't get it until it was too late to renew. This book is overdue because I started it, hated it, and set it aside. Now I'm going to have to pay a fine, bleh. That's the only bad news!

Here in SoCal all is sunny and warm. Sunday we scrambled about Joshua Tree and drove to Indian Wells to check into the aforementioned fancy hotel. Monday we spent at the hotel pools, where I managed to put a hole in my bathing suit. Schoolwork required some lion reading, so we went to the library in Rancho Mirage. Tuesday we went to the children's museum. I had planned to spend a couple of hours there and then drive back to Joshua Tree but Victoria stayed at the museum for almost six hours so we went to the playground behind a YMCA instead and then went back to the hotel for some TV. Today Brian's conference was finishing by noon so Victoria and I went back to the library to do some schoolwork. We didn't get far before she had a weird meltdown so I left. By the time I got to the La Quinta library she was ready to resume. After that, we played in the park behind the library and then we went back to pick up Brian and drive to Pasadena.

I was sorry to leave the desert because I really didn't get enough desert-visiting done but that's life. At least here Brian is on vacation, too, which always makes things interesting. And the internet is free again!

Mmmmmmm desert. I miss the desert. Desert good for my sinuses. Sounds like you folks are having quite the time out there. I gotta come up with an excuse to go to Phoenix again.

See if you can go online with your library card number and renew it. Libraries around here let you do that even if the book is overdue. If you do it with the Cleveland Public Library it will even erase your fines.

I renew all my books on-line, usually on the last day possible. I end up with almost 9 weeks (if the book isn't requested by someone else). In fact, I will often try to renew, find there is a hold, then renew later in the day, and the hold isn't there. (They used a particularly crappy algorithm for the holds, I think!) They also give you one day grace; so for example, I have books that were due on the 15th; I can get them to any library before it opens today (the 17th), and no fine.

Unfortunately, I found out the hard way that any video (DVD or VHS, 7 day or 3 week check out) has no grace period :-( Off to pay my fines on-line by credit card (and at least get 1% back).

Sounds like a great time in California! I miss visiting there...

Me too! They notify us two days before it's due, but I didn't look at my email for three days. Sad. It is, however, hard to be very sad on vacation!

Yay for vacation! I do have enough books checked out, though, that I check before vacation to renew them if needed...once on vacation, though, I don't worry about it! Have a great time, I don't know about the weather in Ohio, but it is snowing here in DC (2+ inches so far) -- pretty but supposed to turn to sleet and then rain.

I got all excited when I read this but I can't renew it. I think someone is probably on the waiting list to read it, I know I had to reserve it to get a copy. We'll be back on Sunday, I'm just sorry I didn't return it sooner--I thought I'd give it another chance after a few days since many people recommended it. Then I must have set something on top of it and I really forgot all about it. Susan Faludi's The Terror Dream.

snow not sun
Boy, do I wish I were there in the sun! Koralleen my parents have 80 acres just outside Blythe and my Dad's sister is in Glendale. I was born in Pasedena. My birth parents are both in the LA area. Did I mention I wish I were there in the sun instead of the snow.

Re: snow not sun
I can relate. After growing up in the sleet-and-slush capital of the nation, ironically enough the Nation's Capital area, two years alternating between Tempe and Paradise Valley (on weekends I stayed with the grandparents 'cause the dorm cafeterias were closed) ruined me for the whole "living in a cold climate" thing. And after 20 years in Florida, if I have to spend more than a long weekend around snow I'd probably freeze to death. :-)
