I can't seem to take Victoria to the closest park right after work without running into Developmentally Delayed Dude. He looks like a regular guy in his 20s, but he always makes a beeline for the playground when we arrive. He says hi and then he just hangs around, really close. When she was climbing one side of the playset, he went to the top of the slide and just watched us. We switched to the other side of the playground and he came over and climbed onto one of those slides, too. Then he started making monkey noises. If there were another grownup around I might not be so wary, but so far it's just been the three of us and I always cut out early. Yeah, I know a better person would talk to the guy and make a new friend but it's too weird for me.

yes yes yet
Yeah, that is pretty much how I feel about it, too. I don't know anything about the guy other than what I've seen and heard during a half-dozen trips to the playground. He might be a harmless dude who likes watching little kids play. I don't want to the one to find out if that's not the case ... but it doesn't make me feel like a fine human being, being so suspicious. Cautious. Whatever.

Ugh. That sucks. Any other playgrounds nearby? I'm totally in the camp of seeking comfort, even if it seems selfish, anti-social and overreacting. Those things just don't compare to protecting your cub.

We are lousy with playgrounds around here, this is just the closest one--and we don't have to cross any big streets to get to it. It has the additional advantage of being right next to an open field, so there's a good chance of running into a dog or two (and their walkers). It's an unofficial dog park. Weekend mornings there is a big crowd of dogs. Nice!

So we'll just walk a little further and hit the next park over. It's not like I couldn't use the exercise.
