This is in the Sunday Magazine part of the Post (which is how I managed to see it and read it). As someone who rides the metro once or twice a month, I am amazed at how much they underplayed IPod use -- I would guess over half the people (me included) have earbuds in and are listening to their own music.

Not that I think there would be a lot of difference otherwise. I'm sure I would have been one of the people who guiltily scurry past because I have mixed feelings about this sort of fund raising. I would like to think I would have heard and listened, since I spent 7 years studying the violin (and sucking at it), but my head is usually in a fog when I come up from the metro. The people who said that context or surroundings matter are right, I think.

Aha, I did not notice that it was a magazine article! I was impressed by the writing and surprised that it ran as long as it did. Excellent piece, an astonishing stunt for Joshua Bell, and the timing was exquisite. And I'm pleased that Jennifer recognized it as something I would want to read.

I read that article and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think it had been a while since Gene Weingarten wrote such a long piece. I like his Below the Beltway column from that magazine issue, too.
