reach out

This evening after I stopped at a gas station I couldn't turn the key in the ignition. It's happened before, something about the steering wheel being in the wrong spot. This time, however, I could not find the right spot. I tried for a good ten minutes and then--in panic, I guess--I called Brian.

Just yesterday I fielded a couple of calls from Jennifer, who had driven the truck into a parking lot at school and was stuck on some ice. I was trying to be helpful, but how much could I do from here? I wondered why she thought it would help to call me to say, "Uh, I'm stuck on some ice."

I no longer wonder. You're stuck and nothing is working and you are tired of trying the same thing over and over again, so you do something different: call someone. Brian was very nice about it, but I am sure he was wondering why I thought it would help to call him to say, "Uh, I can't start my car."

It did start eventually.

I had that happen to me the first year I was working in College Park, I think. Called DH (Dear Boyfriend at the time) and he said, well, just keep turning the wheel. I must have eventually gotten it, I don't think he drove down there to get me...
