Bag Day

It is so hard not to load up on crap at booksale bag days. I did ok today with a handful of winners, a bunch of $6-10 stuff, and another handful of books to read and toss. Then I took the kids to dinner. It had to be somewhere close to campus because Jennifer had things to do. We went to Plato's Diner, not too impressive. Awful service and mediocre food. I can get that at home for a lot less money.

What's the last thing you ate? an Altoid

What's your favorite cheese? Gouda, but I change my mind often

What's your favorite fish? I really don't have one. The last fish I ate that was fantastic was some rockfish that Brian caught on a charter out of Chesapeake Beach.

What's your favorite fruit? strawberries

When, if ever, did you start liking beer? I do not recall ever not liking beer.

When, if ever, did you start liking shellfish? I think I've always liked them, every way but uncooked

What was the best thing your mum/dad/guardian used to make? I think my dad's white sauce and sliced hard-boiled eggs on toast was about the best thing. We didn't get a lot of good food when I was little.

What's the native specialty of your home town? I guess my home town is Silver Spring. If there is a native specialty I am unaware of it.

What's your comfort food(s)? bread and other baked goods

What's your favorite type of chocolate? dark

How do you like your steak? I'm not crazy about steak. I usually aim for medium rare.

How do you like your burger? I'm not crazy about burgers, either. Mustard, onions, lettuce, tomato, cheese--by that time, you could just leave the burger off.

How do you like your eggs? I don't care as long as they're cooked all the way--no runny parts.

How do you like your potatoes? Mashed potatoes are very good, but I can't think of a way that I don't like potatoes.

How do you take your coffee? I usually put cream in it, and sugar if it's not great coffee.

How do you take your tea? With honey if I have a sore throat. Or plain if I'm just sick otherwise. If I'm feeling good, I am not drinking tea.

What's your favorite mug? I do not have a favorite mug.

What's your biscuit or cookie of choice? oatmeal butterscotch at this moment. I don't have an all-time favorite.

What's your ideal breakfast? Bacon, eggs, coffee

What's your ideal salad? lots of different greens, cheese, onion, tomato, bacon

What food(s) do you always like to have in the fridge? eggs, cheese, peppers, yogurt

What food do you always like to have in the freezer? ice--but someone keeps emptying the trays without refilling. I also like to have frozen chopped spinach.

What food do you always like to have in the cupboard? tomatoes (diced and puree), broth, rice, noodles

What spices can you not live without? garlic, pepper, basil, cumin. I could live without caraway seeds but I'd rather not.

What sauces can you not live without? worcestershire, soy sauce

Where do you buy most of your food? It's split three ways most weeks, from a farm, Safeway, and Shoppers Food Warehouse. I also go somewhere extra most weeks.

How often do you go food shopping? a couple of times each week

What's the most you've spent on a single food item? Probably a big piece of meat, but I don't know how much it cost. I paid $4.99 a pound for some peppers once because they were a spectacular shade of brown. I was going to stuff them, so I parboiled them--they turned into green peppers. I wanted to cry.

What's the most expensive piece of kitchen equipment you own? I bought a food processor for $40. Some items in the kitchen probably cost more, but I didn't buy them.

What's the next thing you'll eat? probably an omelette
