Do Alligators play Saminilla

I happen to be reading a book about deaths in the Grand Canyon, a gripping review I'd recommend to anyone who likes exactly the same books I do. The hypothermia victims have my ardent attention at the moment, as the 40 seconds it takes me to go to the mailbox and back are excruciating at -7°F. Good training for the inauguration, where the temperature is predicted to hover around freezing. Sounds delightful!

I took this picture on Wednesday when the snow was coming down. In other news, Brian is working on the recipe for hot buttered rum. He made a vat of this butter-batter to which you add rum and hot water. It's like drinking a spice cake. There are approximately 600 calories per swig. It's great stuff.

Can't show that photo to my kids. They'd be jealous. For all the cold we havent' seen a single sticking snow yet and I'm getting tired of the deep freeze without the lovely pay-off.

About that Grand Canyon book? The single biggest reason why a trip to Arizona won't come for at least two more years. I need confidence that small blond children won't run grinning straight off the edge. Now I know how my dad felt!

The statistics are probably skewed by parents with similar thoughts, but the only children under the age of 13 who have fallen to their deaths were inside a car that rolled off the edge in 1958. There are some horror stories, though! One stunning fact is that unsuccessful flights over the canyon have killed more people than drowning, falling within the canyon or from the rim, flash floods, and heat COMBINED. Pretty amazing, although the numbers get a boost from a spectacularly horrible mid-air collision of two commercial flights in 1956.

Don't tell you-know-who, but it's snowing again here.

Wait! So that means we need to go before E's 13??? 8-)

(Feeling silly. I finally got the guest list compiled for K's birthday and it's taken everything out of me.)

Or small non-blond children.

My grandmother stopped my dad and his brother from throwing rocks in the Grand Canyon so they wouldn't fill it up. (around 1955)

Loved the photo! I wish we would get some snow. It's supposed to be a balmy 31 here tomorrow.
