Come on down!

Here's a little quiz for all you home furnishings consumers. You need to put a house together. The kitchen has a stove, refrigerator, and microwave already but you have no small appliances, no dishes, no utensils. Dining room is empty. Living room is empty. Family room is empty. There are four empty bedrooms. How much money would it take to make this house comfortable ... and, don't forget, nice?

I ask because I recently learned what Brian is thinking. He proposes a sum of

15 THOUSAND DOLLARS

I might be able to do it, but it's going to take some effort. Craigslist, yard sales, flea markets, a lot of luck--and patience. Or larceny.

Yeow. Good luck.

I have no real idea how to furnish an entire house on that little money. I suppose if you found a place that had unfinished wood furniture and then you finished it yourself you might save some dough.

I've also had some good luck buying things like a hutch online (Ebay and then you put it together yourself).

There's also always the solid pine furniture at Ikea (are there Ikeas where you are?).

Hey! Spending 15 THOUSAND DOLLARS(tm) is totally easy.

Oh. Wait. You mean *getting* 15 THOUSAND DOLLARS(tm) maybe?

Ikea ships anywhere, I think. Oh, wait. Probably not "nice" enough, right? Right...

Mom just happened to mention that Macy's has mattresses on sale. Not that it's a cheap way to go, but if you're still looking for something nice ...
